“Gevalletje buitencategorie. Geen plaat overigens die je, zoals Never Be Scared/Don’t Be A Hero (2009), meteen bij eerste beluistering van je stoel doet kletteren. Ornaments heeft iets meer tijd nodig, maar vrees niet: dat ligt zeker niet aan de omvang. Want wat als eerste opvalt is dat Dorleijn en zijn mannen zich niet gek hebben laten maken. Op Ornaments geen overweldigende ideeënlawine of andere doorgeschoten krachtpatserij om toch maar in hemelsnaam aan die torenhoge verwachtingen te voldoen. Nee, de plaat klinkt aangenaam basic en in control. Veel overbrengen met weinig (nog zo’n signaal dat duidt op Groot Songschrijverschap) en de muzikale subtiliteiten geduldig hun scheikundige reactie laten aangaan, zoals Radiohead dat ook kan op geïnspireerde momenten. Luister naar het Shins-achtige Give Love To The Ones You Love of het daaropvolgende Everything Died In Your Heart en het procédé wordt duidelijk: meer dan wat percussie, een eenvoudig (staccato) gitaarthema en een hartverwarmende zanglijn komt er niet bij kijken. Voor de rest profileert Moss zich op Ornaments overigens amper nog als gitaarband.Maar zeg nu zelf, experimenteren met ritmes,keyboards en elektronica is natuurlijk ook stukken spannender, zeker zolang je zorgt dat je je niet vergaloppeert. En bij Moss zit dat wel goed. Zoals eigenlijk alles – de kwaliteit van de songs voorop – bij Moss wel goed zit. Over jaarlijstjes lullen we nog niet, maar neem van mij aan: we gaan de naam Moss dit jaar weer met gezonde regelmaat horen.”
